About this artwork: Birdman of Alcatraz --Robert Stroud, center, known as the “Birdman of Alcatraz,” was escorted to his unsuccessful early release hearing in Topeka in the 1961. He was convicted of first degree murder three times and was scheduled to be hanged. In 1920 President Woodrow Wilson commuted his sentence to life in prison. He spent 54 years in prison, 42 of those years alone in a cell. While at Leavenworth penitentiary, not Alcatraz, he studied birds and raised over 300 canaries.
